4. Next you should turn off your broadband connection and your PC.  Then simply unplug the cable from your broadband line (called the Ethernet cable) and plug it into a local area network (LAN) port on the back of the wireless broadband router. The other end of the cable should remain connected your PC.

5. Now you are ready to install-Wi-Fi connect a second Ethernet cable between your wired broadband modem’s Ethernet port and the wireless broadband router’s wide area network (WAN) port.

6. Once step five is completed, turn the modem on and wait for the status lights to indicate that it’s connected to your ISP. This may take up to a minute.

7. The next step is to plug in the wireless broadband router. The status lights will blink as it self-checks to see that everything is working properly.  Please note that this step may take a minute or so. Once the lights stop blinking, you are ready to turn on your wired PC.

8. After all Install-Wi-Fi connections are successfully completed, you are ready to set the security settings that are pre- built into the wireless broadband router.

These settings are called MAC (media access control) addresses and SSID (service set identifier) numbers. (Please refer to terminology sheet for definitions)

9. It is important to note that the default SSID number is often set to linksys (if it's a linsys router)

...You can choose any name you like but don't make it obvious, like your home address To change this number, you can use your PC’s, that's a no, no Internet Explorer browser to browse the configuration of the router...

  • It’s a good idea to set the SSID name to the same name between all wireless devices. This enables the PC, router and other devices to recognize and collaborate with one another.

10. If your operating system is Windows XP, now you can easily check the Media Access Control (MAC) address. By typing in the command prompt, “ipconfig /all”.

Be sure to input all MAC addresses into the wireless broadband router as well as your notebook or desktop MAC address. ]

This helps specify devices that communicate with the router, similar to a person’s signature used as identification.
